Preparation stage of dissertation writing process

December 7th, 2007

One of the hardest stages of completing a dissertation is to start writing .We always put aside this responsible task thinking that we will start working on it tomorrow. Certainly, the next day we will have some other important things and excuses why we do not have time.

So the question arises: “How to start working on the dissertation and organize this process in the most effective way?”

First of all, you need to devote some of your time to thinking on the best topic for your dissertation. Basically, the best dissertation topic is the one which is interesting for you and, hopefully, your committee; the best dissertation topic focuses on the issue which you find appealing and up-to-date; finally, the best dissertation topic is chosen on the basis of the thorough review of dissertation literature information.

Secondly, you need to create a database which should consist of the review and summary of dissertation literature information. How can you know what literature sources will be the most appropriate? Well, you can ask your teacher to provide you with the recommended list of literature for your dissertation.

Thirdly, you are supposed to find out all the guidelines and requirements you will have to follow while working on your dissertation. You should not neglect the importance of this step like the majority of students. If you know what your teacher’s expectations are- you will not waste your time focusing on useless actions.

So, these are the three steps of preparing to write your dissertation. Choosing a good topic, working on the database for your future dissertation, ascertaining all the guidelines will help you produce a worthwhile dissertation and save a considerate amount of your time since at least 30 % of work will be already done during the preparation stage.
